Preliminary analysis of volcanoseismic signals recorded at the Tatun Volcano Group, northern Taiwan

چکیده
[1] The Tatun Volcano Group lies at the northern tip of Taiwan only 15 km north of the capital Taipei. A seismic array consisting of 5 stations equipped with both broadband and short-period sensors was installed in 2003 in order to monitor the seismic activity of the area. It recorded a variety of events including common volcano-tectonic earthquakes and volcanoseismic signals like tornillos, short duration monochromatic events (10–15 s) and long duration spasmodic bursts ( 15 min). An analysis of the complex frequencies of the tornillo/monochromatic signals shows that Q-values are of the order of several hundreds. Based on the model of a fluid-filled crack, such Q-values can result from the oscillations of a crack containing a misty or dusty gas. These observations put into doubt the long-standing suggestion that the Tatun volcanoes are extinct and prompt for a thorough assessment of the volcanic hazard for this area. Citation: Lin, C. H., K. Mapping Seismic Attenuation Structures of the Volcanic Area in Northern Taiwan
Three-dimensional body-wave attenuation structures beneath the volcanic area in northern Taiwan are obtained by using the seismic tomographical inversion method. In total, both Pand S-waves of 137 local earthquakes with magnitudes between 2.0 and 5.0 were analyzed. Those events with 3-component digital seismograms were recorded by the Central Weather Bureau Seismographic Network (CWBSN). The re...
متن کاملEvidence for a magma reservoir beneath the Taipei metropolis of Taiwan from both S-wave shadows and P-wave delays
There are more than 7 million people living near the Tatun volcano group in northern Taiwan. For the safety of the Taipei metropolis, in particular, it has been debated for decades whether or not these volcanoes are active. Here I show evidence of a deep magma reservoir beneath the Taipei metropolis from both S-wave shadows and P-wave delays. The reservoir is probably composed of either a thin ...
متن کاملAn infrasound array study of Mount St. Helens
The ongoing activity of Mount St. Helens provides an opportunity to study the infrasonic wavefield produced by an active, silica-rich volcano. In late October 2004, as a pilot experiment for the Acoustic Surveillance for Hazardous Eruptions (ASHE) project, we deployed two infrasound arrays, each co-located with a broadband seismometer and weather station, to continuously record seismo-acoustic ...

Palynological analyses from exposed palaeolacustrine deposits located at the flanks of Damavand volcano, in the central AlborzMountains in Northern Iran, provide a broad idea of the temporal variation of vegetation according to climate changes during a rangeof limited time intervals during the Quaternary period. This research reveals that the regional vegetation of the study area had been asemi...
متن کاملEvidence of explosive seafloor volcanic activity from the Walvis Ridge, South Atlantic Ocean
[1] Hydrophones moored in the North Atlantic Ocean recorded a sequence of explosive, volcano-acoustic signals originated at the Walvis Ridge in the South Atlantic Ocean. 365 explosive signals were detected from the Walvis Ridge beginning 24 November 2001 continuing through March 2002. The largest swarm began on 19 December at 2329 GMT, and lasted 1.25 hrs producing 32 locatable events. Swarm lo...
